In Paul Hawken's forthcoming book Blessed Unrest, he describes a growing social phenomenon that is sweeping "civil society".

Here's an excerpt:

"I now believe there are over one million organizations working toward ecological sustainability and social justice. Maybe two.

By conventional definition, this is not a movement. Movements have leaders
and ideologies. You join movements, study tracts, and identify yourself with
a group. You read the biography of the founder(s) or listen to them perorate
on tape or in person. Movements have followers, but this movement doesn¹t
work that way. It is dispersed, inchoate, and fiercely independent. There is
no manifesto or doctrine, no authority to check with.

I sought a name for it, but there isn't one."

Alvin Toffler had a name for it in his 1970 work Future Shock. He called these "purpose governed" groups Adhocracies, and predicted they would replace bureaucracies as a way of organizing work and civil society. Adhocracy enables "mass collaboration", turning the structured conversationbases of NetworkedBooks into social action.

If the blog is to continue the use of posting low-resolution digital images taken from flickr or from googleimage search where the image is usually found connected to a specific blog post, use of a "fair use" disclaimer could use either the wikipedia fair use bug shown in the previous pos or another similar one from Creative Commons if there is one.

The "fair use" disclaimer could refer automatically to tags included in the post. This is particularly important when the blog is used as a reconstruction platform for Networked Books in which "snippets" of audio,video, text, presentation slides, are used as an attention-saving device for users who may/or may not wish to buy a full copy of the book.

Wikinomics is particularly interesting in this light since the authors :

• provided an e-book pdf for free download of Chapter One of the book

• Issued a specific challenge to readers to engage in augmenting the book through posting to
what the author's entitled " The Wikinomics Playbook" which carries this invitation in the
printed version of the book, and is also issued verbally by Don Tapscott in his presentations
about the book and the author's memes presented there.

The likely result of the NetworkedBook process is to create a larger market for the author's books, increasing the book's value to both author and publisher - so that "infringement" of the author's IP could not be claimed on the basis that the fair use of images, text, audio and video reduced the market share and profitability of the author's books or other related IP by limiting the NetworkedBook such "fair use" content as selected presentation slides,and snippets of audio/video content from longer works.

A related question is the use of NetworkedBooks as educational platforms for stimulating learning and application of the action-oriented content of the books and other author's IP as learning objects - a practice which is allowed under the fair use statutes.

We may need to visit with Creative Commons to find a specific CC deed and license suitable for what we plan to do. This will also apply to the IP content of visual interpretations by graphic facilitators under contract to perform their services and the resulting images and their repurposing as user interfaces to the underlying content - This needs to be made part of any contractual relationship with these professional artists. If the contract is made clear about the ownership of the images being held under contract by the organization/person who pays for the work to be done, and restricts the artist from reuse without permission or under a
CC 2.5 license allowing free use with attribution but no commercial application. by the artist.

Here is a clip from Wikipedia where the item editor posts this low resolution copy of the cover of The Selfish Gene.

It describes how the editor justifies the "fair use"of the image, and is worth reading for its detailed description of the justification.

Could it be that all Networked Books should use a similar fair use statement and the wikipedia icon?

Obviously, a big part of the consumer market that book publishers have owned for 200 years want the nuggets, not a narrative. They're going, going, gone. The skills of a "publisher" -- developing content and connecting it to markets -- will have to be applied in different ways.

Peter: I agree that it is not the mechanical act of interconnection that is to blame but the demand side preference for chunks of texts. And the demand is probably extremely high, I agree.

This new "hack" for AppleTV provides RSS feeds direct to HDTV and could serve up ConversationBase content without having to archive the material on iTunes.

Future versions of the plugin will include audio and video feeds so that the entire multimedia content array could be automatically syndicated using the RSS plugin as a customized feed reader

I think this passage offers a pathway from the world of textual to videoscopic to algorithmic - capturing in a few sentences the dramatic difference between books, video and games.

Vannevar Bush was the Director of the Office of Naval Research in 1945 when he wrote about his vision for the MEMEX which inspired me in my work in computer-assisted document retrieval systems in the 1970's and was the seminal text that inspired Doug Engelbart in his promethean work that led to the development of the Internet, graphical user interfaces, hyperdocuments and the mouse. The synthesis of books in a visual format is a critical component in the NetworkedBook project
so I have included these 3 "posters" by the artist Adelheide Mers as examples of the visual synthesis that is possible when linking the talents of an interpretive artist with the thematic material of an author's book.

Here is how Adelheid Mers describes her purpose in diagramming the book Moral Politics by George Lakoff.

ABOUT MAKING DIAGRAMS Mers says: I diagram essays and books because this is how I make sense of the texts I read. I read these texts to help make sense of what I experience. I have all kinds of questions and seem to have a knack for finding answers in print. Text is never dry, it is always brimming with figures of thought, some obvious, some subtle and waiting to be extricated. I make pictures from texts.
